Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of code-mixing in informal student conversations within the campus environment. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of code-mixing used by students and to examine the reasons that influence the occurrence of code-mixing in their daily interactions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through observation and recording of informal conversations among students in the campus environment, particularly within the English Tadris society. The findings reveal that there are several types of code-mixing used by students, namely insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, with insertion being the most dominant type. Students tend to mix languages in the form of words, phrases, and expressions. Furthermore, the study finds that the use of code-mixing is influenced by several reason, including the speaker’s habit, the need for expressing certain meanings more effectively, lack of vocabulary in one language, and social identity among peers. In conclusion, code-mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon in informal student conversations and plays an important role in facilitating communication and expressing identity within the campus environment.
