Abstract

The problem underlying this research is the students’ difficulties in understanding English instructions given by the teacher in the classroom, which affect the smoothness of the teaching and learning process. This study aims to identify the types of difficulties experienced by students, the factors influencing these difficulties, and the strategies used by students to overcome such barriers. This research was conducted at SMAN 9 Seram Barat in 2025 with Grade XII students as the research subjects. The research employed a qualitative method with a case study design. Data collection techniques included classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively to provide an in-depth description of the phenomenon of students’ difficulties in understanding classroom instructions. The results of this study indicate that students experience several types of difficulties, including aural decoding failure, processing lag, contextual disconnect, barriers to understanding complex instructions, and semantic response uncertainty. The factors influencing these difficulties include linguistic barriers and cognitive limitations, instructional factors, and contextual and affective conditions. To overcome these difficulties, students use strategies such as Asking for Clarification, Peer Support, Note-Taking and Highlighting, Self-Regulation Strategies, and the Use of Bilingual Resources
