Abstract

A language’s structure and usage are governed by a systematic set of rules called grammar. In order to facilitate effective communication, it includes the rules that specify how words fit together to create phrases, clauses, and sentences. Mastering English grammar is essential for effective communication and comprehension in the English language. Grammar provides the structural basis for conveying meaning in both written and spoken forms, enabling students to create clear and cohesive sentences. This study aims to investigate the factors affect students’ difficulty in understanding tense and also the kind of students’ difficulties in learning tenses, this study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing three data collection techniques: interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data analysis process involves data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal several learning difficulties that affect English education students in understanding tenses. These difficulties are categorized into two main factors: internal factors and external factors. Internal factors include physical condition and lack of competence, while external factors consist of family factor, college facilities, and teaching method. All the factors above give the effect to students, there two factors did not give negative impact, namely lack of motivation and environmental factor. Meanwhile there are other thing that affects students also that is kind of students’ difficulty in learning tenses, namely auxiliary verb, verb form, tense rules, and function.
