Abstract

This research examines the word formation processes of spells in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The purpose is to identify the morphological processes used in spell construction and to classify their functions within the narrative. This research used qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the primary data were taken from the film, while secondary data were gathered from linguistic books and journal references related to morphology. The findings reveal that borrowing is the most dominant process in the creation of spells, especially from Latin, French, and Aramaic sources. The original meanings of these borrowed words are often preserved but reinterpreted to fit magical contexts. For example, Avada Kedavra, derived from the ancient term Abracadabra, originally meant “let the thing be destroyed” but was recontextualized as a lethal curse. Furthermore, the study identifies that each spell functions as a directive speech act, performing an immediate effect in response to the speaker’s command. Spells like Accio (to summon objects) or Expelliarmus (to disarm opponents) illustrate how linguistic form and magical function are closely intertwined. The research concludes that Rowling’s linguistic creativity demonstrates how morphology not only shapes fictional vocabulary but also supports storytelling by linking etymology to narrative purpose.
